Down south, teachers are becoming an endangered lot.

ACT Teachers Party-List Representative Antonio Tinio called on national and local authorities to work for the immediate release of a public school teacher abducted in Basilan.

On Monday morning, kidnappers abducted Cecilia Sosas and Merlyn Yacapin in the town of Lamitan, Basilan. Yacapin managed to escape but Sosas remain at the mercy of her captors. Sosas is a school teacher from Baas Elementary School in Lamitan.

Tinio denounced the abduction and called on President Noynoy Aquino to act decisively to resolve the situation. “The last months of the Arroyo regime were marred by the wanton abduction of teachers in southern Mindanao, culminating in the kidnapping and subsequent beheading of public school principal Gabriel Canizares in Sulu last November. This cannot continue. Pres. Aquino must put a stop to the targeting of teachers.”

Noting that the perpetrators of these acts have so far gone unpunished, Tinio challenged Malacañang to “end the impunity which allows such violence to take place.” #
