The ACT Teachers Party-List joins the nation in mourning the death of former president Corazon C. Aquino. Her moral and physical courage in standing up against the tyrannical Marcos regime inspired millions among the Filipino people in persistently fanning the flickering flames of freedom in our land.

Her willingness to join the broad array of forces against the brutal dictatorship hastened the eventual downfall of Marcos and his cronies. As president, she released many political prisoners despite strong opposition from the military. She meant to emphasize that at all times, civilian authority is supreme over the military.

After her presidency, she remained committed to the advocacy of good governance and civil rights. She continued to speak against official excesses, specifically persistent moves to change the constitution so as to effect term extension during the terms of Ramos, Estrada and more recently, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

We mourn with the rest of the Filipino people the death of Cory Aquino especially during this time of brazen corruption and misgovernance at the highest places of government. It is sad that Cory has left in these evil times. Let us carry on our fight against corruption, electoral fraud and tyranny. This is the best way to honor Cory Aquino.#
