On the same day that the Yolanda tragedy struck, another disaster fell upon Filipinos who were betrayed by nine votes favoring a hero’s burial for Ferdinand Marcos. We are very dismayed by this decision as it reversed a long line of jurisprudence affirming the darkness that was Martial Law, and replaced a sinister history as Marcos’s story.
The Supreme Court’s decision is supreme error for it nullifies the sacrifices of those who lived and died fighting tyranny and plunder. It denies justice to the countless who were tortured, murdered, and disappeared in the name of Marcos and his dictatorship, and the entire Filipino nation whose democracy and economy it trampled.
We condemn this decision as it gives license for the Marcoses to maintain that nothing was wrong with his dark reign—a judicially-sanctioned historical revisionism implying that Marcos was best thing that ever happened to the country.
Those rejoicing this alteration of history also expect a “national healing”—something that is impossible without acknowledgment of the injustices, apology, and compensation. Such “healing” imparts forgetfulness of the lessons of history, and sanctions a repeat of its mistakes.
Despite this decision, we will continue to teach the youth to never forget the true history. MARCOS IS NO HERO! ###
