ACT Teachers Party-List Representative Antonio Tinio will join teachers nationwide Friday in observing the School Bell Ringing Day for Salary Upgrading.  The nationally coordinated event will be spearheaded by the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) and ACT Teachers Party-List to highlight the clamor of education workers for adequate salaries.

At noon, Tinio will be ringing Batasan National High School’s bell for fifteen minutes, symbolizing the long-standing demand to upgrade to Salary Grade (SG) 15 from SG 11 the minimum monthly pay of public school teachers.  The upgrading will give entry-level teachers P24,887 monthly instead of their current salary of P18,549.

Bells in other schools nationwide will be ringing simultaneously. 

ACT Teachers Party-List and ACT expect principals and other school officials, who will also benefit from salary upgrading, to participate.

“In a rare occurrence, teachers will encourage students to be as loud as they can, all the more for PNoy to hear, as he prepares his SONA, teachers’ claim to their right to adequate remuneration,” Tinio said.

The event is part of the campaign for the passage of HBs 2142 and 4523, which call for the upgrading of the salaries of teachers and teaching personnel in the tertiary level (from SG 12 to 16), and HB 3746 which call for a P6,000-increase in the minimum pay of other personnel.  HB 3746 is principally authored by Anakpawis Party-List Representative Rafael Mariano.
