“With the recent approval in the increased of benefits (combat and incentive pay) of the uniformed men through Executive Order (EO) No. 3, now I ask the President, where is the salary increase for teachers? We cannot forget this since this was one of his election campaign promises.”

Thus said Rep. France Castro of ACT Teachers Party-List when she reiterated that teachers are in dire need for a salary increase since this will create a domino effect of focusing more on providing quality education and of lessening the stress brought about by financial matters.

As the different parts of the country celebrated the National Teachers’ Month on September 5—October 5 and the World Teachers’ Day 2016 tomorrow, October 5, the lawmaker added that “An increase in salary will always be the best gift for teachers in their special day and it’s not too late for the president to grant it.”

Fellow ACT Teachers solon Antonio Tinio said that it will never be too ambitious for teachers to demand for a just and decent pay, as well as augmentation in benefits like the teaching supplies or “chalk” allowance [reminder of Budget Sec. Diokno’s statement].

“We have provided an amendment in the 2017 budget during the House hearing wherein an additional P3,500 be allotted to the current P1,500 teaching supplies allowance (resulting to P5,000). Allotting P2,45B for the said allowance will benefit the 700,000 public school teachers we have now in the education sector,” Tinio said.

The lawmakers then invite the education sector to join the program in Mendiola, tomorrow in line with the WTD celebration to present these issues that teachers plead for.###
